1. What school district and grade/s do you currently teach?

I am currently a K-4 Intervention Specialist at Tussing Elementary School in the Pickerington Local School District in Central Ohio.

2. What is one positive experience that you have had with a student?

There are so many to pick from!  There was one particular student who did not like school, or to coming to school.  So, every morning, I would make sure to great him and tell him how excited I was that he was at school.  In class, I would make sure to note if he was participating, or commenting positively on his work.   One day, when I was saying how excited I was that he was there, he responded with "I'm excited to be here too."  I honestly could have cried.  He has since advanced to 3rd grade, but he comes to my room every day to tell me good morning, and that he is happy to be in school.  Sometimes, it just takes one teacher to believe and be intentional with a student to change their demeanor.  

3.  What advice would you give to current students who are enrolled in the teacher preparation program at SRU?

Ask as many questions as possible!  I feel I was more prepared for student teaching because I asked my co-ops and professors about their experiences as teachers.  Also, be as proactive as you can!  Get involved on campus, especially clubs related to education.  I learned so many skills that I use in teaching, and have been able to collaborate with teachers that I met at SRU because I was involved. 

4. Name an SRU faculty that had a positive influence on you and explain why.

Dr. Snyder was one of the best professors I had at Slippery Rock.  He taught me what it means to actively engage students in their learning, and always answered any and every question I ever had.   

5.  What makes a great teacher?

I think what makes a great teacher is the ability to build and keep relationships with students.  I have found that I am able to reach them where they are at because they know that they are cared for more than their academic performance.  Show interest in their extra curricular activities, and let them share stories.  A great teacher creates a space where students feel valued and heard.
